5+ stars – Historical/Regency Romance

This was my starting time read by Samantha James and I loved it! Information technology'south definitely my favorite of the Perfect/Sterling trilogy, all of which I enjoyed. I was in desperate demand of a feel-good romance, and this definitely striking the spot! It's reminiscent of "My Fair Lady" and "Cinderella" and also reminded me a fiddling of Julia Quinn's An Offer From a Gentleman, which is 1 of my favorites in the Bridgertons series; even so the story and characters seem wholly original as well

This was my first read by Samantha James and I loved it! It's definitely my favorite of the Perfect/Sterling trilogy, all of which I enjoyed. It'southward reminiscent of "My Fair Lady" and "Cinderella" and also reminded me a little of Julia Quinn'southward An Offer From a Admirer, which is ane of my favorites in the Bridgertons series; yet the story and characters seem wholly original besides.

With an platonic combination of emotion, malaise, and touching, sweet romance and a remarkable H/H who will have y'all cheering for their HEA, A Perfect Bride is a satisfying read. Information technology was the "perfect" antitoxin for my crummy mood, which is why I'm rating it v+ stars!

A lovely romance about a young lady, Devon, whose mother died and left her lonely to fend for herself in the slums of London. She is attacked by thieves on night and stabbed but manages to kill one of the criminals. The H Sebastian saves her and takes her to his home. I enjoyed reading most his attempts to plow her into a lady and teach her to read. It was then perfect. He's a stuffy but very sexy Marquess and has a fleck of emotional luggage himself: his mother had been a rather promiscuous woman who had ever embarrassed the family before her death then Sebastian has sworn to himself that he volition but marry a woman who will be the "perfect" bride for a man in his position. He wants a noblewoman who is not going to scandalize his family proper name. The homeless, illegitimate heroine fills none of these requirements but he is however fatigued to her from the minute he saves her.

Devon has had a hard life. Her mother had been a governess who had fallen in love with a duke's son. All that rake gave the mother was a family unit heirloom necklace and pendant and a pregnancy. Devon all the same has the necklace and pendant and it helps her paternal grandmother, a dowager duchess, identity her. She too has her dad'due south rare colored amber eyes then the old duchess knows she has institute her granddaughter.

Earlier all this happens though, Sebastian thinks that the ideal plan to safeguard Devon'due south future is to ally her to a suitable and wealthy gentleman. It was then funny seeing him eaten upward with jealousy when the prospective husband candidates plow up for dinner. Sebastian eventually seduces Devon and falls in honey with her but still cannot see her as his wife because of her background. Just when he decides that he loves her plenty to ally her, her grandmother turns up and takes her away. Of course I've simplified it a lot, but this was truly one very beautiful romance novel. I volition definitely exist reading the third novel in the series. That ane is called A Perfect Hero and features Sebastian's sister. I won't be reading the 2d novel A Perfect Groom because I didn't like the description of the heroine and I really liked Sebastian's brother Justin.

His sense of honour can't get out her bleeding to death in the streets so he whisks her off to his townhouse where he lives with his brother Justin. They think she is a thief when they detect her clutching her mother'south necklace and when Devon wakes up sparks fly!

This book was the near delightful books I've read in quite a while. It was funny and sugariness and it was a Pygmalion story every bit adept as they become. Both Devon and Sebastian was truly lovable and post-obit their building romance was a pleasure. And the HEA - let's only say that information technology was as sweet as cotton wool candy. How tin I take missed Samantha Jones? *Scurries off to bank check the balance of her books*

I think I spent 75% of this book repeating What the fuck am I reading right now? in my caput over and over. Don't get me wrong, in that location were sure parts that were kind of sweet, but they were few and far between. From the glowing reviews, I was certainly expecting better. But I refuse to believe that was part of the problem. This book didn't suffer because of my high expectations, it suffered because of its underwhelming, melodramatic, frankly awful, writing. I know this is a archetype, beloved past many, just I wasn't impressed. And I stand by my opinion.

This is a classic rags to riches/My Off-white Lady-esque romance, a trope I'm actually quite addicted of. They usually involve a heroine who is potent and feisty and a hero who slowly (or rapidly) comes to adore the heroine for her survival skills and courage. Even better, usually the hero's eyes are opened to the plight of the less fortunate and sometimes even decides to do something about it. This book really didn't go the memo on either.

Sebastian Sterling, the Marquess of Thurston, finds a bleeding Devon on the streets of St. Giles. She's clutching a necklace that should be out of her means so he assumes she's a thief, but his conscience keeps him from leaving her bleeding out in the street. And so naturally, he takes her dwelling to run into what the damage is and phone call a dr.. Devon comes to in the Marquess' abode and is dismayed to find that the Marquess and his brother firsthand assume the worst of her. She'southward protective of her identity of course, but not for the reasons they think. She was stabbed by one of 2 evil street gang members who were trying to rape her and she killed i of them in self-defense. She knows that the surviving man will hunt her. Sebastian, very confronting his starched upwardly, rigid personality, decides to let her stay until she's healed and figures out a plan. Information technology turns out that Devon wants to be a governess (her mother was a governess) so Sebastian takes information technology upon himself to teach her everything she needs to know- you know, similar reading, writing, geography etc. She already has some knowledge, her mother was a governess after all. During this time, when Sebastian isn't insinuating or outright saying that Devon is a thieving whore, they begin to fall for each other. But, stuffy-stick-upwardly-his-donkey Sebastian refuses to bring further scandal upon his family by even entertaining the idea of marrying Devon.

At that place was a lot I didn't similar nigh this volume. I'll offset with Sebastian.

For i, when Devon was injured and Sebastian and his blood brother, Justin needed to take off her clothes to get a better look at her injuries, they both shamelessly ogled her body, mainly her breasts. Full on, telling each other Oh my god, they're gorgeous, aren't they? Who knew she'd have such beautiful breasts? ogled. Gross. And then nosotros take some massive slut-shaming. And just equally bad, (perchance worse?) slut-assuming. He assumes she'southward a whore and refuses to believe her when she tells him otherwise. Fifty-fifty when she tells him that not making a living on her back was a promise she made to herself considering information technology was something that was of import to her mother. She simply must be a whore because Sebastian decided to visit Devon'south former place of work and witnessed her fellow barmaid tolerating men grabbing her body.

"Bridget," she said levelly, "is not a harlot."
His lip curled in distaste. "If that is what you recollect, then your morals are most assuredly displaced."
Devon opened her oral cavity, prepared to deliver a cutting retort. Before she could say a give-and-take, he spoke. "There is no question she's a harlot. What and then, I wonder, does that make you?"

I'd like to analyze that this isn't at the first of the volume. This wasn't the first, 2nd, or even third nighttime she stayed with them. This is near 40% into the volume. He knows her. Likes her. Has had his easily all over her. For some reason, Sebastian'south asshole qualities didn't diminish as he fell for Devon. In fact, the closer they became, the worse information technology was. Instead of Sebastian slowly growing on me, I hated him more and more than. (view spoiler)[ For example, afterward in the book, after Sebastian has spent a decent amount of time with his tongue downwards Devon's throat, Devon overhears Sebastian tell his brother that he's willing to pay someone to ally Devon because he worries that if she'south a governess, she'll be taken reward of by some carnal gentleman of the ton. *Cough*hypocrite*coughing. Of course, he becomes said lecherous gentleman. Why? Because she tempts him besides much and he only can't continue his hands off of her. Doesn't she realize that she'd be rubber from him if she were less cute and alluring? She's doing this to him! Pffft. FFS. (hide spoiler)] Sure, Sebastian would oftentimes realize later that he was existence a ginormous asshat, but it never really changed his actions.

I liked Devon. I think I would have liked her more if she had a fleck more of a backbone. Slapping Sebastian for calling her a whore is corking, only the fact that she immediately apologizes and is in his arms kissing him kind of ruined that. This became a pattern throughout the book and I hated it. She never stuck to her decisions. The only role of this I enjoyed was that every fourth dimension Devon (temporarily) denied Sebastian, my schadenfreude would rear its ugly head and I would hear Nelson from the Simpsons doing his HA-HA in my head.

As for the writing...Ugh. Besides the book'southward flowery, overdramatic writing, every other sentence concluded in an exclamation indicate. I'g not exaggerating either. Every. Other. Damn. Sentence. I fucking hate exclamation points in romance novels. They ruin the characters for me, especially when they're used during sexual activity scenes. You lot know, stuff like Oh, your body is beautiful! I love the style your chest hairs feel in my fingers! or Please! Have me now! or even something as simple every bit She hoped that was him at door! Her centre was beating then fast! It makes the grapheme sound like an excited kid and depending on the judgement/situation, it's either really annoying or kind of gross. A part of me wonders if I'yard being nitpicky merely I don't care. They were overused and for me, information technology affected the label and the tone of the book.

And then we have the rods, staffs, pillars, and maleness'.

I read a lot of Hr, but man. It. Was. So. Bad. This isn't a volume from the 80s. Not fifty-fifty the 90s. This book was published in 2004. The hero was constantly thinking about how rigid his rod was and how he wanted to plunge his pillar in her and vent his passion while playing with her pleasure button. Not to mention that his pillar of maleness was always nestled against her softness when they kissed. I mean, I'thousand used to reading virginal heroines using cliched romance novel words to draw hero's body parts, you know, lack of feel and all. But the hero? Information technology's just fucking weird. Put it this way, the give-and-take cock wasn't used in this book, not once. Every single time whatsoever man bits were referenced, the author used a ridiculously flowery euphemism. This was the first time I actually skipped pages of sexual activity scenes. Skim? Yes, certain, sometimes. Merely I never skip multiples pages. I could only take so many throbbing staffs and rods finding their means to warm wetness and passions. I understand that some of these phrases are normal and/or expected in near historical romances, I really do, only it was ridiculously over the top. Eventually, all I could do was express mirth at the absurdity of it all. And that was really the problem. It became really, actually, funny and it wasn't supposed to be. Instead of the sex being steamy or tender it was only hilariously atrocious. On top of all that, they had zero chemistry. None.

Was there anything I actually liked about this volume? Meh. There was something about it that fabricated it evident that information technology was written by an experienced author. There weren't whatever continuity issues. Sentences had proper structure. Maybe I'g just likewise damn picky. Some people similar flowery, over the top romance. Maybe it's weird that I have such a trigger-happy dislike for excessive exclamation points. Mayhap it'south romantic that despite all of the reasons Sebastian gave Devon to run the fuck away and find someone else, she stuck past him and gave him the love he'd never had. Who knows. All I'm saying is this book just wasn't for me.

Devon, almost mesmerized by the reverence she sensed in him, was on the verge of reaching for him. She stopped in mid-movement. "He?" she echoed. "He?" She swallowed hard. "Sebastian, who practice you hateful? Who was right?"

He'south also SUPER hung up on whether or non she's a virgin because that evidently impacts the """territory""" or some shit IDK. It's gross.

3. Devon is your standard manic pixie heroine: she's spunky and fun and naive just also a sexual goddess just waiting to be revealed!! Only since this is a romance, I knew it would end well, and the journey was smashing.
Devon St. James is the heroine, in the beginning, she's working in a tavern, dealing with all these grubby guys groping on her, trying to make her living. Her mother recently died, and at present her landlord just raised the rent on her crummy little basement room to an impossible corporeality. It's closing fourth dimension, and she'due south going home, all alone in the wee hours, through this atrocious part of town. All she has left of her mother is a cantankerous necklace, which she keeps in her pocket, with her at all times. Soon she'southward set upon past two notorious thugs, and they steal her coin and her necklace, but she tries to fight them off, killing one in the process, just not without getting injure herself. She proceeds to laissez passer out in the street. Along comes the hero, Sebastian Sterling, marquess of Thurston, in St. Giles in search of his wayward younger brother Justin, who's out gambling and drinking, and almost probable whoring. The railroad vehicle stops due to the obstruction in the road, and he decides to help her, seeing that she'southward very pregnant, and bleeding from a wound in her side. He scoops her up and takes her home, installing her in a guest sleeping accommodation, cleaning her up, and finding out rapidly that the pregnancy is just a disguise. He bandages her wound (but not without ogling her glorious boobies of course), and dresses her in one of his sis's fine nightgowns. Justin is already home, having beaten his brother back from any he was doing in St. Giles, then he helps set up her upwardly, and fifty-fifty ogles her boobies too. She wakes upwards, and understandably freaks out a petty, mostly concerned for her missing necklace, which Sebastian has hidden away, thinking the worst of her, assuming she stole it. He tells her the rightful possessor can have it back once things are straightened out, and that kind of ticks her off, but she's too weak withal to make a rebellion. She knows he won't believe her, due to their class differences. Oh, yea, and at that place's the threat of the gangster out in that location looking for her, because she killed his blood brother. So Sebastian decides to keep her with him and Justin for awhile. A couple of days pass, and Devon heals, and begins exploring the house, finding the library, Sebastian'southward favorite room. That leads to a give-and-take, wherein Seb decides he's going to teach her to read, and help her gain the skills to become a governess like her mother before her (it was only through Dev's own stubbornness that she wouldn't let her mother teach her, much to her shame). He's also gone to St. Giles to check her story, and is horrified by her working and living weather condition. He swears to never let her return to that life. Days laissez passer, and a friendship (and lust for each other) blooms betwixt them. Seb is pleased to learn she's smart, and finds her beauty irresistible, and she'south the focus of many fantasies for him. Sebastian's always the perfect gentleman though, e'er following the rules and existence polite, non letting whatsoever hint of scandal affect his family unit since their scandalous female parent ran away from their mean and overbearing father years ago. When Justin spills their family history to Devon, Seb leaves the firm in an angry rush, just Devon begs him to have her likewise, and they leave for Thurston Hall, the Sterling land estate, and the identify where Seb is most comfortable. They spend the next twenty-four hours wandering the estate together, through the gardens, and meadows, flirting and teasing each other, sharing a kiss, falling in love if you volition. Then Justin shows up and the men make up one's mind they can't let Devon be a governess, at the whim of the men of the houses she'd be employed at, knowing she'd probably end upwards back on the streets. So they decide to ally her off. Well she finds out about their plan, and is pretty upset, feeling similar Seb just broke her heart. He rushes after, and consoles her in the only style he knows how, by making sweet, sweet love. Well, of course that but makes her fall even more in dear with him, and the adjacent few days they spend together are positively magical for them. Then, Justin shows upwardly once more, and tells her that his brother will never ally her, because of his proper-ness and duty to the title and all that, breaking her middle all over over again when Sebastian doesn't exactly fence against his brother's claims. He "consoles" her again, telling her he tin't allow her go, but not telling her he'll ally her. Thankfully, Devon's surprise long-lost grandma from her unknown begetter'southward side shows upwardly and whisks her abroad back to London. Seb tin't stand the thought of living without her, and realizes what an donkey he's been, and has to fight to make amends, with her grandma'due south help in the finish, leading to a very touching reunion and HEA. I'd love to read the side by side two in the series, Justin's story, and their sis Julianna'south also. A very skilful book in my opinion.

The story isn't unique, but the characters are very likable and believable. The lilliputian scrap of angst was plenty to get me emotional.

Basically, worth a read. A simple story with excellent delivery.

A very sweet, charming book that could be a Disney movie, probably PG-13 because of a few scenes at the finish of the volume. She has figured out how to stay alive in her state of affairs and keep the adept morals her mother had taught her, simply she has dreams to leave of this horrible life and move to the other other side of the tracks where she belongs. I was raised on musicals and I could just see Audrey Hepburn singing "Wouldn't it be Loverly", my begetter would exist and so proud to know I really watched and listened when I was younger.

Enter Sebastian, a marquess from the right side of the tracks. Sebastian is all about the family, loyalty, and tradition- a definite blue blood through and through- and he just announced he is in the market for a wife and so he can produce and heir. He happens upon Devon stabbed and unconscious in the street. He takes her dorsum to his home, he nurses her back to life and sparks fly. Even though this might be Devon's fairy tale, to awaken in a beautiful bed with a gorgeous prince, Sebastian thinks she is a harlot with a sorid past and subconscious secrets. She does take some secrets, not the immoral things Sebastian believes. I loved when she chosen him Lord Shyte and Lord Arse- she definitely had some spunk- and didn't accept his high and mighty attitude. Sebastian turns Devon into a beautiful swan and although they fall in honey, Sebastian knows she can never be for him.

The story is very cute, pretty predictable, and very heart warming. But add together a little Princess Diaries to the cease and it the perfect fairy tale romance. Thanks Shawna for the recommendation!

About the end they were separated but the hero's heartfelt avowals to Devon were heartbreaking.

Some other re-read. I first read this book early 2000s, and I liked it and then, which is why I wanted to re-read it. Expert story, passionate prose, overly emotional heroine (what's with all the weepy females?), and an emotionally stunted hero.

Their growing friendship and zipper felt very real to me and I enjoyed the chemistry they shared and the dialogues betwixt them.
My only complaint, bated from its predictability that is, is the rushed ending. As well much happens in the last few chapters. You lot don't really have that much time to let it all sink in, which makes information technology experience somewhat unrealistic.
It even so managed to brand its way into my 'favourites' shelf, and that makes two in a row for Samantha James -the only two I've read by her by the style-, which makes me recollect she might just become one of my favourite authors as well.
For now, I've decided to give A Perfect Groom a 2d reading, for the simple fact that Justin is only so damn charming and irresistible, and I merely have to read his book again.

None-the-less, (the hero) Sebastian's raw sexual desire is quite seductive giving the book an extra thrill. Samantha James does a very skillful job portraying his lust and raw masculine desire.

The heroine, Devon wasn't as compelling a character for me. She was meek when information technology seemed her graphic symbol would have been stiff and she was stubborn when it was pointless. I plant her personality to exist very boyish and lacking real depth similar Sebastian's character. I found the volume to be surprisingly erotic, generally entertaining but the end was frustrating and cliche in addition to being rushed. It was still an entertaining read and a dainty introduction into a series that volition exist based on Sebastian (the Perfect Helpmate) and his sibling's Justin and Julianna.

Justin was a interesting sub-character in this book and I will relish reading about his development from a complete Rake into a monogamous relationship with most probably a virgin. He is known as the nearly attractive man in London and his sexual prowess is mentioned often, fifty-fifty alluding to menage with more than than one woman.

Juliana had a mere cameo in The Perfect Bride every bit she was on the continent cooling off after her involvement in a scandal, presumably a sexual indiscretion. But she is described every bit a compassionate and kind woman and I imagine her story will too entertaining and hopefully as sexy as her brothers.

Miss Devon St. James is alone in the earth afterward her female parent dies and she works equally a barmaid and barely makes enough to survive. She is at her last finish when she is attacked on her way home in St. Giles slum in London and she passes out after being stabbed in the street. She is really lucky because Lord Sebastian Sterling, Marquess of Thurston happens by and decides to save the body she finds in front of his carriage, which is very very unusual because rich people did not cease in a slum to help anyone, they only paid out to charities to assist them without having to smell the stink in the ghetto gin soaked slums. Then Sebastian saves the bleeding body which turns out to be the beautiful Miss Devon.
I really loved how smart she is by pretending to be hugely pregnant to make a safe passage dwelling which worked for more and then a twelvemonth, before she is attacked past some really unscrupulous thieves. The writer shows how smart and inventive our heroine is, without having to spell it out by making her a book carrying, eye-glasses wearing 'blue-stocking'.
So nosotros run into our two main characters and the dance of romance begins to unfold although it is generally lust for Sebastian, and relief from poverty for Miss Devon. This was a sweet romance and I'll admit that I wa surprised at the twist at the cease that happens in Miss Devon'due south bedroom (no spoilers from me, you're going to have to read this bang-up book!). Overall underwhelming. My 2d read by Samantha James, and coincidentally both stories involved course differences between the lord and the guttersnipe - of sorts. I mention this considering both books were interesting to kickoff off with, but the middle and finish are merely too boring. No mystery or disharmonize. In that location is some initial and interesting tension considering Sebastian has the hots for Devon'due south boobs, but he thinks she's a thief and a prostitute. Meanwhile, Devon is offended that Sebastian thinks she's a thief so she has a comeback for everything he says to her. By the way, Devon was spicy in the kickoff just so she became kind of a doormat? I was *this* shut to DNF. When Sebastian decides to grant Devon's wish to be a governess by tutoring her, this was the bespeak the book, personally for me, took a nosedive. Also, when I read Pygmalion plots, I read information technology for the outsider drama only nope. Devon fits in right abroad to guild! However, I put information technology down and came back to it with lowered to nonexistent expectations, and was able to finish it.

A Perfect Bride played it safe. Going dorsum to the other book I read by James, I call back I preferred Gabriel's Married woman. Too about class differences, also had problems with the centre and finish, but the characters were more interesting, even if that's not saying that much.

A bit of shame since I did enjoy James' writing manner and certain scenes.

Growing up in Joliet, Illinois, Samantha James had many childhood aspirations--being a writer was never 1 of them. When she was x, she was certain she was destined to exist an astronomer. When she was ten, she was certain she was destined to be an astronomer. That shortly changed (happened a lot during those pre-teen years!) when she decided archæology was in her future. Detective piece of work was her next goal, thanks to the Trixie Belden mysteries she was reading, and earlier long, nursing beckoned (courtesy of the Cherry Ames series). In college, she set her sights on educational activity history, then briefly entertained the notion of becoming a flight bellboy, simply to detect she did non like to fly.

Having been raised in a family of gorging readers, she was rarely without a book in hand. Her tastes were rather eclectic. She got hooked on the Dr. Barbarous serial and Edgar Rice Burroughs after her older brother finished them, in her teen years, moved on to Agatha Christie, Daphne DuMaurier, and Phyllis A. Whitney.

In the meantime, the right guy came forth. They met on a semi-blind date at an office Christmas party. She was told he wanted to get out with her, and he was told she wanted to exit with him. Half-dozen months afterward, the U.S. Regular army shipped him off to Frg--and she wrote faithfully at to the lowest degree 3 times a calendar week--she often jokes this was the start of her writing career!

Marriage followed, also every bit three daughters. Samantha left the detective work to her husband and turned her attention to raising their girls. When her youngest was six months old, 2 things happened: 1) she read Moonstruck Madness past Laurie McBain and scrambled to find every historical romance she could lay her hands on; 2) her older brother revealed he was writing and submitting his short stories to big-name magazines. As he put it, "I've been rejected past the all-time of 'em."

The seed was planted. Rejection was a dreaded word, but Samantha figured, "Well, if he can take it, then can I."

That summer, she wrote not one book, but three--longhand, in a notebook, during naptime. Bedtime. Any fourth dimension she could. The called-for desire to write was a long time in coming--she was nearing thirty past so--but she discovered that once she set pen to paper, she couldn't terminate.

Those 3 manuscripts did get the dreaded rejection alphabetic character (they're yet languishing somewhere in her attic), just she finally hit pay dirt with her fourth. Samantha's brother promptly proposed collaborating on a fantasy together--alas, still unwritten... Nowadays, she's firmly convinced she'south the queen of rejected titles for her books. She's only managed to retain two original titles thus far, but writing is indeed a dream come true...
